The Tactile DM: Why 3D Printing Changed How I Prep Campaigns
Digital toolsets and VTTs have transformed the tabletop landscape, but for many GMs, nothing replaces physical presence at the board. Over the last few years, home 3D printing has completely shifted how I approach game preparation.
Being able to bring an original monster design or a piece of custom terrain from a digital STL file to a painted physical piece on the table does three big things:
Instant Scale & Threat: Abstract theatre of the mind is fantastic, but placing a custom-printed, multi-part miniature on the table instantly changes the energy in the room.
Supporting Indie Sculptors: The STL creator economy is booming. Platforms that connect independent digital sculptors directly with players are fuelling a massive wave of artistic innovation.
Grounded Player Focus: Physical props and tactile terrain keep eyes away from screens and fully locked into the shared narrative space.
For the GMs, sculptors, and hobbyists in my network: Do you prefer running fully digital, traditional theatre of the mind, or a hybrid setup with custom physical prints?
